Dar Es Salaam, Nov 18, 2010 (The Citizen/All Africa Global
Media via COMTEX) -- Mr Jaffar Amin, son of former Ugandan
strongman Idi Amin, is pairing with Madaraka Nyerere, son of Tanzania's founding president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, to climb Mt Kilimanjaro to raise money for Chief Edward Wanzagi Girls' secondary school in Mara region.
The young Amin, who visited Tanzania in April 2008 in an event sponsored by the BBC Swahili Service to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tanzania-Uganda war, is scheduled to arrive in Moshi on Nov 21 for the 8-day climb from Nov 23."During my first climb in 2008 I managed to raise publicity and public awareness and succeeded in raising more than Sh.20/- million towards the construction of dormitories for students at the school," Mr Madaraka Nyerere has revealed.
The idea for establishing the school was initially conceived by Mwalimu Nyerere. Musoma Rural Member of Parliament, Mr Nimrod Mkono has been the principal benefactor of the school as part of efforts to raise the quality of education in his constituency. Elaborating on the event, Mr Madaraka said the school still needs funds to implement a number of developments including construction of a sports field. He appealed to members of the public to donate funds for the cause.
Other climbers will include Madaraka brother, Mr Makongoro Nyerere who isChama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) regional chairman for Mara region, Ms Mary Kalikawe, director of Kiroyera Tours, and Mr William Rutta, Chairperson of Bukoba Disabled Assistance Projects (BUDAP). This year's climb is also raising funds for BUDAP for its projects for the disabled in Bukoba. Mr Madaraka has climbed Mt Kilimanjaro each year since 2008 to raise money for various charitable causes.
